101 Bagels & Subs, Oceanside

101 Bagels & Subs in Oceanside has really good bagels and friendly service. However, I'm giving them 3 of 5 stars because they only serve Pepsi fountain drinks (I got a Coke Zero in a bottle) and they don't have a bathroom.

The ride was good. I still don't have a new chain and sprockets so I didn't use 10th gear. But I still averaged almost 20 mph. The 5 miles or so on the Oceanside bike trail was really nice.

The route and stats are shown below.

Golden Bagel, Black Mountain Road

My second Bagel Ride was to Golden Bagel on Black Mountain Road. The bagel was good. It was a little more "floury" than Einstein Bros Bagels, not worse, just different.

The ride went well. I stayed out of 10th gear and I didn't have any problems with the chain falling off. Two observations about the ride:
  • The Komoot app sent me through the Cosby private golf course with gates at the entrance and exit. (The first gate let me through on a side-walk and I didn't realize there would be another inner gate.) To get in, I went through with some cars. About a half-mile from the exit, a private security vehicle rode close behind me and then had to let me out. I guess they don't take too kindly to strangers in The Crosby.
  • I should have done the ride in reverse (clock-wise) so I would have more right-hand turns than left-hand turns.
My new 500 Wh battery performed well. The first three bars (of five) went off at 12, 24 and 36 miles so it's still on track to provide 60 miles of power. But I'm not going to count on more than about 48 based on the life of my 400 Wh battery.

Below is the route with ride stats.

Einstein Bros Bagels, Lomas Sante Fe Dr.

I went on my first official Bagel Ride to the Einstein Bros Bagels on Lomas Santa Fe Drive.  It was a good ride except for my chain falling off because I need to replace it. I used my new 500 Wh battery and the first and second bars went off at 12 and 24 miles on ECO mode. From that, one would predict that it would last for 60 miles. But on my 400 Wh battery, the bars went off at 9 and 18 miles, which indicates it would be good for 45 miles, but it only lasted 36 miles. I'll test the range of the 500 Wh battery on my next ride.

The route and stats are below. The Komoot app worked really well. I used the voice notification feature and it briefly interrupted my Pandora music to let me know when a turn was coming up.

The Bagel Shop List

Here are the 26 bagel shops I plan to visit with the distance from my house and the Google rating. I selected shops with a rating of 4 or above, but included all the Einstein Bros Bagels because I like their bagels. (Bold means I've completed the Bagel Ride.)

I added a bonus ride to Einstein Bros Bagels in Santee so I could do an 80-mile ride before doing a 70+ mile ride through Joshua Tree with a friend.

Another bonus ride was added, Mike's Bagels & Coffee, because I had an empty space in my summary table, it has 4.0 stars on Google maps, and it claims to have cranberry bagels which Einstein Bros has discontinued.

The Best Cycling App

So I want a cycling app to do two things:
  1. Plan my route on the computer and then navigate the route during my ride
  2. Track my actual route so I can get stats and display it on this blog
Ideally, I'd like one app to do both things.  But I'd also like to avoid paying a subscription for the app so if I have to use two different ones, that's fine.

Here are the apps I've tried for planning and navigating a route:

MapMyRide
  • Pro: Route planning on the computer works well
  • Pro: Planning routes and navigating are free
  • Con: Pausing and then resuming doesn't work--I have to exit the route and restart to have it continue tracking my progress
  • Con: Navigation is glitchy.  It often gets confused which way I'm going and swings the map around for a second or so before going back to the current direction
  • Con: It doesn't save my actual route so I can access it on my phone or my computer
Ride with GPS
  • Pro: Route planning works well
  • Con: Navigating the route with the phone costs money ($5/month or $50/year)
Strava
  • Con: Route planning on-line is glitchy (limited zoom, doesn't show houses, not all buttons work, moving map around doesn't work from all positions)
Komoot
  • Pro: One region is free and my entire riding area in San Diego is one region
  • Pro: On-line route mapping tool works well--it suggests routes but they are easy to modify
  • Pro: I tested it with a spiral loop route around my house and it worked well.  It turns off the screen between turns to save on battery
  • Pro: After saving the ride, the on-line website shows the ride and that stats--just what I wanted

That settles it, I'm going with Komoot.

My Bagel-Rides Bike

My goal is to ride to every decent bagel shop within 35 miles of my house in the Bressi Ranch neighborhood of Carlsbad.

I'll be doing it on this bike, a 2016 Trek XM700+ e-bike. I just bought an extra battery for it so I should have enough to ride 70 miles if I keep it on ECO mode (adds up to 55% extra power).

Next up: Finding a good cycling app that will track my ride and show it on a map so I can put it on this blog.
