So I want a cycling app to do two things:
- Plan my route on the computer and then navigate the route during my ride
- Track my actual route so I can get stats and display it on this blog
Ideally, I'd like one app to do both things. But I'd also like to avoid paying a subscription for the app so if I have to use two different ones, that's fine.
Here are the apps I've tried for planning and navigating a route:
MapMyRide
- Pro: Route planning on the computer works well
- Pro: Planning routes and navigating are free
- Con: Pausing and then resuming doesn't work--I have to exit the route and restart to have it continue tracking my progress
- Con: Navigation is glitchy. It often gets confused which way I'm going and swings the map around for a second or so before going back to the current direction
- Con: It doesn't save my actual route so I can access it on my phone or my computer
Ride with GPS
- Pro: Route planning works well
- Con: Navigating the route with the phone costs money ($5/month or $50/year)
Strava
- Con: Route planning on-line is glitchy (limited zoom, doesn't show houses, not all buttons work, moving map around doesn't work from all positions)
Komoot
- Pro: One region is free and my entire riding area in San Diego is one region
- Pro: On-line route mapping tool works well--it suggests routes but they are easy to modify
- Pro: I tested it with a spiral loop route around my house and it worked well. It turns off the screen between turns to save on battery
- Pro: After saving the ride, the on-line website shows the ride and that stats--just what I wanted
