Busy Bee's Bagel Bakery, La Jolla

I took a 56-mile ride to Busy Bee's Bagel Bakery to test out the range of my new battery. It lost power at 52.8 miles so now I know that I have a range of about 88 miles with both batteries. The bagels at Busy Bee's were quite good and reminded me of the ones at I Heart Bagels in Oceanside. They only had diet Coke (no Coke Zero) and no refills but the place was nice so I give it four stars (mostly because of the bagels, plus they did have a bathroom and self-serve water that I used to fill up my water bottle for the ride back).

Chain Problems

This was also my first ride with my new chain, sprocket and cassette. I thought changing those would fix the problem of the chain coming off the front sprocket but it happened again 10 miles into the ride. It was a pain to fix because of the chain guard but the master link on the new chain made it easier. While I was at the bagel shop, I googled the problem and found others have had the same issue with the Trek XM700+. Some people have found that they can replace the sprocket lock ring with the E-Chainguard Nut from Miranda which is the part used on the Trek Powerfly 7. I ordered the part today from amazon-UK and it should be here on Thursday.

Komoot Problems

I also had a problem with the Komoot app.  I retraced my route for about a mile through La Jolla and it didn't alert me to my turn even though I was traveling the other way on the route. It seems to get confused if you're on the route twice. I'll have to pay attention to this next time I retrace my route. Otherwise, the app is working great at telling me the directions as I ride.

10th Gear is Back

I changed my chain, front sprocket and rear cassette today and now I can shift into 10th gear without the chain falling off.

Update #1:  I spoke too soon: See this post from the next ride.
Update #2:  Problem fixed finally with Miranda E-Chainguard Nut.  See this post.

The front sprocket was an easy swap.  I'm glad I got a new O-ring because the old one was pinched and broken when I removed it.  I over tightened the lock ring because it has a reverse thread and it turns out my torque wrench doesn't click when used in the reverse direction.

The rear cassette was also an easy exchange. It's hard to tell how worn down the old one was because it's so dirty and because the teeth are different sizes and shapes even when new.

Finally, changing the chain wasn't too difficult eitther. The difference in the old (top) and new (bottom) chain was quite dramatic. I lined up the other end of the chain and stretched them both out as far as they would go.  The red and blue links are 111 links from the end and you can see the old chain was stretched about a half link. I put on a Connex chain made for e-bikes so hopefully it will last longer than my previous one (about 1300 miles).

Signature Bagel, Escondido

The ride to Signature Bagels in Escondido was really nice. Most of the way was on the Rail Trail bike path. And the ride home was either on roads without much of a bike lane but with few cars, or roads with nice bike lanes but with a lot of cars--both were good for riding.

Signature Bagel was nice. The service was friendly, they had Coke Zero in a self-serve fountain drink, and they have a bathroom. Unfortunately, I found the bagels to be just so-so. They weren't as tasty as other bagels, and the insides weren't very soft and chewy. They reminded me of the bagels at Sun Flour Bagels in Carlsbad.

I still don't have a new chain or sprockets, so I avoided using 10th gear so the chain doesn't fall off the front sprocket. But the parts should come this week so hopefully the next ride I'll have all 10 gears.

Sun Flour Bagel, Carlsbad

Sun Flour Bagel is the closest shop on my list--about 3 miles away--but I took the long way and rode about 17 miles before getting there. The ride was nice although I didn't realize there was a massive hill about half-way through (see plot below from Komoot).

The bagels were just okay. They weren't as crunchy on the outside or chewy on the inside as I like. Also, they didn't have Coke Zero or self-serve fountain drinks so I couldn't fill up my bottle with water for the ride home. Fortunately, I was only 3 miles from the end of my ride.

The Hill about half-way through. With the e-bike, it wasn't too bad. And going down the other side was fun.
